There is another possibility here and I hesitate to post it, but I think I will. McCain was doing well after the convention until the economic crisis hit full blast. Immediately the country shifted to Obama. Just as the economic crisis helped Obama in the polls, many think a military or security crisis would do the same for McCain. I think it would have the opposite effect and would push more towards Obama.

It is possible that Bush is trying to get as many Al Qaeda leaders as possible before the admin change in January. Leave his legacy, etc. Or, worse, it is an attempt to push others to act against us (scary) in order to put more behind McCain and his experience. I hesitate to think that may be the case (purely political in nature). But it should be said by someone. It's also possible that Bush is taking advantage of regime cjange in Pakistan to do something that Pakistan never did - go after the al qaeda hideouts. Until the leadership has a stronger grip on their country or there is an international uproar, they will get away with it.

All possibilities are scary.
