Of course letting the kid raise himself won't work. You have to raise the kid to understand that bad behaviour tarnishes himself more than anybody else. Hitting a kid as a behaviour modification technique only really happens if the job hasn't been done properly up to that point. Either that, or hitting has been the standard all the child's life.

Either way, afaic, it reflects as a failure on the part of the parent to be able to do the job properly in the first place.
