1898 in North Carolina:

Armed mobs trying to lynch the governor
Ben Tillman rode into the state with armed guards to intimidate opponents
The Charlotte News &Observer was an arm of the Democratic Party and made no attempt at objectivity
In those days, if you switched parties, you had to change your church, your neighborhood, and associate with an entirely different group of people
Black voting was limited by intimidation but not law, and in many eastern parts of North Carolina their loyalty kept the GOP as a formidable second party.
According to the Democrats, only white men should hold office. Anyone who voted for a Fusionist candidate was in favor of race-mixing.
