How do you manage your id's at the moment. For this type of thing where I want a particular look and feel, for instance if the id has to be visible, I put a field into a "settings" table and hit that field for my id.

What I tend to do, and this isn't my invention, is have 2 fields, one alpha and one numeric. I put them together to get an id eg RES0000001. Users hit the table and release it very quickly so there shouldn't be an issue with table locking.

For your purposes you would probably stick to just the numeric field.

Another option I've seen used, but don't personally like, is to have the id field being a representation of the user's name and the datetime the record is created.
