>>>One could argue that they've always got the president they deserve! :-)
>>>
>>>But seriously, it shows a maturity and the world seems to be happy with the choice.

>>Those are the types of statements that just don't seem appropriate. Electing Obama instead of McCain is not a sign of 'maturity.' It is a sign of extreme displeasure with the current administration, a desire for extreme change, a different set of economic and political values, a fear of an older president with an inexperienced vice president, and a desire to see history made.
>>
>>I'm sure quite a few 'mature' individuals felt McCain or Barr were a better choice. The majority of the U.S. just didn't agree :o)
>
>What I meant by maturity is that the country has come of age. 60 years ago he'd have been lynched for the affrontery to stand, 20 years ago Jessie Jackson didn't stand much chance (I saw him weeping, BTW, whether from "Thank mighty God ... free at last" or "it coulda been me if I hadn't been born too soon" I don't know :-)

>It's as if the USA didn't even see his colour any more.

I don't think the USA saw color in that sense in a long, long time. I don't recall a really qualified or charismatic candidate before this election who was black (I would still argue the qualified).

Many many democrats did not want to see Jessie Jackson as president. Same with Alan Keyes. Not enough support out there for their policies and their views.
