SimilarI find tax schemes fascinating. Back in 2002, Andy and I were exploring the possibility of moving to Houston. We discovered that we could get a great home there - 3000 square feet of living space, beautiful brick and stone homes, for under 200K. The same home in Akron, Ohio at the time would have easily cost 250K. I seem to recollect that, at the time, Texas did not have state tax. However, the property taxes on that great home we could have purchased would have been 6K a year opposed to the $2800 per year that we are paying in Akron, Ohio. Now, since we are creeping up on 60 and retirement (or at least semi-retirement), this was definitely
not an attractive proposition. To be on a fixed income and strapped with property taxes that took no account of that fact - well, personally, I do not understand how anyone can afford to own property in Texaas and be retired!
