Project.HomeDir can be modified in the Project Info dialog as you know. AFAIK, the only occasion where VFP itself modifies the content is when you get that "Project has been moved, make xy the new home directory?" dialog after moving it.
However, JustPath(_vfp.ActiveProject.Name) might be safer than _vfp.ActiveProject.HomeDir
