McCain's critical mistake was letting go of who he was. From what I have read he wanted his old friend Joe Lieberman as VP, not Sarah Palin, and was talked out of it by the campaign managers like Steve Schmidt who had been airlifted in from the Rovian camp. He stopped talking straight. My guess is that in the 3 a.m. of John McCain's soul he will regret being defeated as someone he only pretended to be. A good man -- a really great American -- who let himself play by someone else's rules.
