http://www.ispirer.com/doc/sqlways38/Output/SQLWays-1-106.html - says that the function is OK to use once per statement, i.e. if you update multiple records you will get the same time. Don't know whether there's anything that would give you a guaranteed-to-differ if you insert multiple records.
