I've never been aware of any of my family who even served in either war, let alone died in one.In the trenches in WWI my paternal great-grandfather was shot by a sniper through the cheek rather than in the head because he happened to turn his head at the last moment. His name subsequently appeared mistakenly in the NZ "supreme sacrifice" list for WWI and ended up in the War Memorial.
