Not sure, but if you want to pass VFP Table/Cursor to SQL Server backend then - No!
Note read much about SQL Server 2008, but I suspect that parameter type is added just to make your live easier when you deal with table variables in SQL Server. Again I'm not sure about, just because I didn't read enough articles :-)
