>>>Dmitry, check out the price of 3rd-party memory as well. sometimes you can save $$$ by buying completely new memory rather than paying Dell's strange prices.
>>
>>Thank you, John. I would be concerned about getting a chip(s) that might not be 100% compatible with a new Dell notebook. On the one hand I do want to save, but on the other hand I would be willing to pay a little more but be spared technical support headaches. Especially when buying a new notebook and trying to maintain the warranty. But thank you for the suggestion.

>That's what they want you to think, and why they keep their prices so high. I have added memory to three different Dell computers (2 desktop, 1 notebook) from 3rd party suppliers and have had no problems whatsoever. Other than figuring out what to do with the money I saved, anyway ;-) As John says, some of them let you enter the exact Dell model you have so you order compatible memory.

You can buy GM with the saving (following on another thread :)). Thank you for the input.

I actually have an older Dell notebook (bought in 2002) which is barely working. I was thinking (after I received the link from John) to buy memory for this Dell to upgrade from 512 MB to 2 GB and to buy a bigger drive to upgrade from 40 GB to something like 120 GB. By the way, did you find difficult (physically) to take Dell notebook apart to stick in new memory chip(s)?
