I don't know how the "notification message" is currently generated - e-mail?

Maybe it could be an automatic reply to the OP in the original forum - leaving just the original post plus the notification reply. Of course, that thread would have to be closed, allowing no more replies. The "auto-reply" could even include a link to the thread in its new location.

Another possibility is to automatically enroll the OP in the new forum.
