Actually not a cheap shot. Coming from a culture where the major problem at funerals is not to laugh (because something always happens each time, and we all seek a valve to express how glad we are that we're still not inhumed), and where this sort of galgenhumor is not an art form, but a reflex (*)... it's a good poke in the ribs among pals, which makes you stop and rethink the stuff from another angle. Our personal joys and tragedies aren't much, in cosmic proportions. Once you're able to laugh at yourself, you're a notch higher than you were before.

Though, I'd say that Terry was below his level - not in intent, but style.

(*) ten years ago there was a flip-flop policy of NATO towards the then FR Yugoslavia, zigzagging between "we're gonna bomb you now" and "OK we won't" for weeks, grating on everybody's nerves. A grafitto appeared on a house in Belgrade, "bomb or let us whitewash".

Not that whitewashing would help much - the classic one is "you whitewashed for nothing" (i.e. in vain).
