Personally, I have no desire to ask attackers; though I accept that legal powers (prosecutors and courts) would have to ask this question as a part of formal proceedings. In my opinion, mass murderers absolutely deserve capitol punshment, after legal formalities done, and I see no value in their explanations. As I already mentioned, their motives are clear, imo.
