Sounds interesting. Since I couldn't get Black Swan on Amazon, maybe I'll give Drunkards Walk a try.

~~Bonnie

>Don't know if I could say better as such. It is easier to read than the Black Swan, shorter and in a more friendly, even humorous style. The Black Swan builds a case for, and focuses on, the impact of the highly improbable, big events. In order to do this it has to discuss random events, probability and so forth. This is its essential theme.
>
>The Drunkards Walk focuses on how general randomness plays a larger role, has more influence in our daily lives and careers than we really appreciate as we generally live under the impression that our own innate skills and talents are more important.
>
>The current financial crisis is all Black Swan stuff and his book is the biggest selling book in financial circles in many European countries (not sure about the States) and was discussed and the author interviewed on CNBC etc. His fund is up 90% for the year ... hmmm. Our current job, position within the company, even our partners and friends, our careers, are all more the outcomes of random events than our well laid plans and skills. This is all Drunkards Walk stuff.

>>You must enjoy books about randomness Joss ... didn't you recommend "The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable" back 6 months ago or so? I tried to buy that one ... it's been back-ordered on Amazon all this time ... they finally notified me last month that they would not be getting it. So you're saying this new one is even better, eh?

>>>It is very well written, in an entertaining style, and an extremely eye-opening look at just how much random events play a role in our lives. We think we are in control and we believe that our skills and talents are primary drivers of our success (or lack of) in life but actually the biggest influences are random events over which we have little or no control at all.
>>>
>>>I have read a lot of books but this has certainly become a favourite. I must admit that I have held the views expressed in this book for most of my life and it is great to read them expressed in so interesting and eloquent style.
