Because you don't have to even know the person exists other than the occasional time you see their response to something when looking through a thread. If you can't see the benefit of that, then it would not benefit you. But it does a lot of us and your view should not prevent us from having this functionality. It does you no harm and benefits us. Do you really care if you are Twitted or not? Why get rid of it?
