>>>Lots of news coming out of Illinois this week. Yesterday the Tribune filed for chapter 11, which was not completely shocking but still a surprise. (A buddy at the Trib says they could have made the $70 million payment that was due yesterday but decided filing for bankruptcy protection was a better way. Sam Zell has them so buried in debt they would be having a hard time even if they weren't in a dying industry and the economy wasn't in the toilet). Now today I see the feds have arrested Governor Blagojevich. Again, no great shock, because he has been as corrupt as any of his Republican predecessors and it had already been reported that the feds have some serious stuff on him. But arresting a sitting governor? You don't see that every day. I have a feeling it has something to do with the naming of Obama's successor as Senator. There have been rumblings that Gov. Rod has been doing the pay-to-play game with that as well, so I can understand the feds wanting to stop that from happening.

>>By now you've seen the press conference. Incredible that after Ryan went to jail that this kind of stuff could go on.

>>FBI: "If Illinois is not the most corrupt state in the US it is a hell of a competitor"

>>I hope Obama is as smart as I think he is. Otherwise, this could be very very ugly.

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
