I don't think so. After you have done parenthesis and exponents, then you can move from left to right doing any multiplication or division as you find them. and then addtions and subtractions.

For example:

5 + (6 × 32 + 3)
5 + (6 × 9 + 3) Start inside the parentheses do any exponents which in this example would be 3 to the 2nd power
5 + (54 + 3) Next comes any multiplication or division - in this example 6x9
5 + (57) Next comes any additions and subtractions - 54+3
5 + 57 When everything inside the parenthesis is completed then the last thing to do is to add in this example

If there were more exponents outside the parenthesis, then it would be done after the stuff inside the parenthesis, but before the multiplications and divisions and the additions and subtractions outside parenthesis.

It's always parenthesis (left to right if more than one parenthesis section i.e. do within the 1st parenthesis section then the next parenthesis section, etc or if one inside another, the innermost first), exponents (left to right), mulitplication and division (left to right), and then addition and subtraction (left to right)

like 4+6x2 = (6x2)+4 = (12) + 4 = 16

and (4+2) x (2x3) = (6) x (6) = 36

Here is another example:

2 + 2[ 5 + (4 - 1)3]
2 + 2[ 5 + (3)3]
2 + 2[ 5 + 27]
2 + 2[ 32]
2 + 64

or did I misunderstand you? Or was I taught entirely wrong? Hey, anything is possible and I'm older too so perhaps I've forgotten... :o)

>Yes, parenthesis would go first in that you would 'take care of' anything within them. Otherwise, it's left to right.
