Just in case it wasn't clear, the Ponzi scheme was named after Charles Ponzi - who did this kind of fraud, but apparently on a smaller scale. Nor was Mr. Ponzi the first to do this kind of thing, just a famous case.
So, the suggested name change would be to "Madoff scheme". But I don't seriously think such a name would stick.
