One simple check - go into Task Manager when your computer is "slow", and check memory usage. On the Performance tab, "Commit Charge - Total" should not exceed "Physical Memory - Total". If it does, your machine is using virtual memory (paging to disk) and will slow down a lot. If that's the case, install more memory, or remove programs that may be memory-resident (running all the time). The Processes tab can help you with this, or you can download ProcessExplorer from Microsoft: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
