I imagine that it's something similar to the women who marry men who cheat on their wives. "Oh, he loves me so much more than her, he wouldn't possibly do that again". Peterson's probably told her a variation of 'she was frigid' or 'she ran off with someone else' or 'she couldn't take being married to a cop' and she was stupid (or young) enough to swallow hook, line and sinker.
