There were a couple of problems:
One was a new firewall which caused intermittent failures. Changing the passivemode property to .F. solved that.
The site seemed be overloading when I sent a lot of files one at a time using the sendfile method.
I changed it to use the sendmultiplefiles method and the overload problem went away.
