Besides what is negative one but negative one times positive one so it's really (-1 * 1 * 2 )^2.. no wait there's a negative number in there so obfuscate it more(-1 * 1 * 1 * 2)^2 and so on ad infinitum.

Exactly right, and since it makes no difference whatever how many -1*1s you put in front, they are simply implied. That's why it's not necessary to show the -1* in front of -2^2.
