McDonnell is a corruption of the Gaelic Macdhomnail - originally a Scottish clan, I understand, including the Macdonalds, etc.
I think the Scottish names have Mac, and Irish have Mc, but I'm not sure. Anyway, my paternal ancestors are from Gallway in Ireland.
BTW it's pronounced "mack" not "mic" as I've heard Americans pronouncing Macdonald's.
