Some of my projects are shared among several solutions and can therfore not be part of the solution. In those cases I open several instances of VS so I can edit both the solution that I am working on and the "shared" projects in seperate instances of VS.
I have not opened the same solution in multiple instances of VS because of the nice tab interface in VS.
