COM/DCOM and OLE Automation
Thanks for all the info and the code Cetin. The originals are templates and for 16 out of 18 of them, saving isn't even an option since Word is never visible. For the other 2 that allow the user to edit copies, the objective is to force them to save in a specific location using a specific naming convention. I haven't thoroughly tested the code I wrote based upon the suggestions offered in this thread and others, but it should be possible to do this so long as SaveAs is removed.
The original issue arose becuase someone had access to the directory holding the telmplates and, thinking she was in her personal directory, deleted them all. While researching ways to prevent that, I uncovered lots of other issues with the automation process. This is an application I inherited a few years back and I'm still finding things that can and should be done differently. There are more options available now than there were 15 years ago when it was originally written. Some of the solutions may cease to work if the client upgrades Word past 2003 but I guess we'll deal with that when it happens.
