agreed...

more work than necessary!
I like giving users freeform access to their data with a 'filter builder' which presents all the fields in a table in alpha and, then, a similar facility to arrange the data in any order they like - including the option to create their own indexes either permanently or temporarily. I suppose I could write a generic combo routine which sorted whatever indexes there were, but it would be quicker and simpler if they could just popup in their 'natural' order as manipulated - or regenerated using tools like Eric is offering. As I don't know or limit what tables they will wish to search or index, and don't wish to create a form to handle this task for every table, it seems the simplest solution, although I accept that the more 'elegant' solution would be a form capable of handling whatever search and index request was thrown at it...
But in any case, all that is academic! I know there are ways around the problem. Been using similar for years in 2.6. My question to the panel is why on earth the 'index moving' feature is built in to the designer and 'allowed' not to work??!!
Regards
Harry
