I've
heard the following works, but must admit I have no experience with it. Further, depending on the directory structure it may not be feasible. What you (supposedly) can do is copy the exe into a new directory on the server, then simply rename the current executable to something else, then rename the directory containing the new executable to whatever the default directory name is. A couple of drawbacks of this is that any support files in the default directory have to be contained in the new one, plus the directory structure must be such that the relative pathing stays the same.
