We have rules. They're just not perfect. Is the solution to ignore them (by saying, for example, that many of them have no basis, which I think is unfair), or to follow them, and by so doing, improve them through practice?

You're right. :) Which is typical of a very young industry. This says to me that we need as many useful rules as we can get.
