This is the feel-good news story of the month, if not the year. Flocks of geese (Canadian! lol) fly into the engines on takeoff from LaGuardia, disabling both of them. Pilot makes split second decision to avoid heavily populated areas and try to glide to a safe landing on the Hudson. It turns out he had training as a high schooler and at the Air Force Academy how to fly gliders and how to land safely in an emergency.

He tells the passengers on board, Brace yourselves, we're going down. He aims the jet down the Hudson and brings it to a bumpy if safe landing. The jet somehow winds up above water and nearby ferries rescue all passengers. It is the perfect moment of the day -- still daylight, crews on board for the evening rush. They all haul ass for the scene of the landing and rescue every person on board.

The pilot is reported to have checked the plane, TWICE, before being the last to step out into a life raft.

Damn right there are heroes.
