>>>I went to an AA meeting today and felt the same thing, with the same intensity, about myself. I can beat this. Anything is possible.

>You're being funny but in fact I am getting involved in some volunteer work. I was doing a lot of that when I lived in Evanston and have let it lapse since moving up here to Near Canada. But there are people who can use a helping hand here, too. I let a good instinct in me lapse and it feels good to get it back.

You know I generally keep my observations on your personal struggles private, but I repeat an observation I made privately to you: your recovery will benefit greatly from the generosity of spirit I first saw in you back in CIS days. I predict you will become a great sponsor in AA and will see that role as a keystone of your own sobriety.

And I do believe you will succeed and your daughters will be very proud of you.

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
