I read in the news that our next President and his wife are out painting houses. Good for them.

The one and only time I have seen Barack Obama in person, or ever expect to now, was on this weekend when he had just been elected senator. (The now stained seat). I was heavily involved with a charity organization called Chicago Cares. They do an annual event on the Saturday before MLK's birthday and I went and helped out.

I stress that Obama was not that big a deal then. Yeah, it was a big deal that he had just been sworn into the Senate as its only black member. But he didn't have airs. None at all. He had no entourage He was dressed as any of us might, dark turtleneck and slacks. It was early on a cold Chicago morning. He started out his brief remarks by saying exactly that -- thank you for coming out here on a cold Chicago morning to do some good for our community. Right then I knew where he was coming from.
