It's definitely the network. Everything works high speed locally, and not only FPD and/or VFP have problems communicationg down the cable - it's also any other copy operation; even browsing a HTML page showed speeds of 500 cps or so from the machine on the next desk.

Taken your advice, though, and uninstalled the Norton Utilities (remember how this slowed W95 machines, and don't care if they say this is NT version). Didn't help; we'll try to put another NIC tomorrow. If ever I had a network card which was nice to avoid, it's Realtek 8029.
