Otherwise it takes too much space under the message and posting new messages become a longer process. I don't think this option would be used that often, so there should be some configuration (perhaps also in the Message View setup) to turn them off.

The customization of an option is always a decision that has to be thought carefully. Over the years, because this went really too far, as far as customization goes, this was one reason why the migration to .NET and the support of the product was so difficult. What we have here is way more than the average technical support Web site. It has always been the case since day one. But, we went really too far over the years and when a setting has to be added now, I really want to make sure that this is really needed. When you go on Facebook, or any other popular site, rarely we will see such availability. As for this one, I do not know. What I know however is that it will be used as it has been requested for a very long time. But, is it really disturbing to have it as is. I have found also many to request a setting immediately instead of thinking more about it. In this case, for example, having a collapse option would be interesting. It would be ON by default. But, a collapse option would make it collapsed, with the setting to be saved so the next time we create a thread, reply to a thread or update a message, the setting would be preserved. So, it would be easily accessed from the form itself. In such a case, that would be much better than to have an option in the account setup.
