Only person's oath that matters is the one taking the oath. No one else is taking the oath.

When you were a kid didn't you ever say "I swear on my life that I'll be there", or something like that?
To you, your life is most important, but to everyone else not so much, so your life is what you base your reputation on. You're the one making the promise so it only matter what object is important/sacred to you not to the person you're making the promise to.
