I saw a number of 75,000, but see now that was total worldwide job cuts announced by U.S. corporations yesterday. It's probably 50K domestic and 25K overseas. However it breaks down, it was clearly not a red letter day for workers or a matter of jobs being there lying around for anyone willing to get off their lazy butt.

While snagging the URL from the Times site I saw John Updike died today. Wow. He was not one of my favorites but nobody can say he wasn't a giant of American fiction.
