Peronsally, I find that it takes up too much space from the message area, so I disabled it. It might work fine with a bigger resolution - I use 1024 x 768 (still using the same old 17" monitor I bought years ago...).

Of course, I am aware that if you don't enable it by default, most members would never notice that such an option even exists, so the way you implemented it seems best.
