It's huge design/implementation flow of the textbox used for From and To. "What you see is not what you get". It silently ignores anything you enter into it. The only way to use it, is to click on the find icon next to it and pick person from there. It also remembers selection even if you remove it from the textbox. You've to click on the clear icon to actually clear it.
