Well, I can certainly see a use for a "message has been read" flag, but number of times? You don't know if the same person read it multiple times trying to figure out what you're talking about because it reads like it was written by a 3 year old on acid, or if 3 people clicked on it by mistake. Suppose it's been read 9 times. Is that better or worse than say, 6 times? Understand, I'm not saying it shouldn't be there. It certainly does no harm, and if people want it, then great; but I guess I just can't figure out what I'll do with the information once I have it.
