The purpose of these units is to handle the unexpected as a rapid response force like Grenada, the Iran hostage crisis, etc. They train while on standby for the next emergency action.

My second guess then is Iran, but it's really difficult to see us picking a fight with Iran now. The recent assessment (within the past few days) is that Afghanistan is really a mess. Maybe the Iranian satellite launch changed things, but it's really difficult to see us doing much about it now.
