IMHO a lot of the unhappiness comes down to deeply seated beliefs involving a clash between good and bad/capitalism and socialism. But that "socialist" label is heavily loaded. Perhaps we should say "public insurance" to emphasize that many publicly funded programs are effectively insurance policies whose premiums come from taxes. Of course the whole distinction has been muddied because the US taxpayer was forced to purchase (socialize) the largest private insurer after its managers screwed up. ;-)

IMHO there's going to be some disillusionment because of private endeavor's recent behavior when the going got tough. Those people weren't even capable of acting in their own self-interest which is almost unbelievable. With banking and industry so important to all the rest of us, IMHO it would be incompetent for government to perpetuate such a failed system. Joe Taxpayer needs somebody watching out for his/her interests which means that US civil servants are going to have to supervize. If that's "socialism" then what alternative is there?
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
