I DON'T GET IT.
I put SET STEP ON right at the top of MAIN>PRG and compiled it, and it worked fine.
Then I took the SET STEP ON off, and ran it and now it's working as expected.
I DON"T GET IT.

Is this a corollary of the old principle "when all else fails, reboot?"
Geez, I had tried just about everything else.
