There are a bunch of 3rd party COMM libraries available that are more controllable and reliable than MSCOMM.

Last time I used VFP with a serial device (medical recording equipment) I used the COMMX activeX control (http://www.greenleafsoft.com/CommX/CommXInfo1.asp) and was VARY impressed by the reliability and the ease of use.
