Hank,

Thanks for that insight. It explains some issues we've had with a handful of customer sites. GDIPlus.dll is shipped as part of a merge module (MS) so we've never bothered to grasp what's really happening under the hood. Only today I observed that the file wasn't in the location it should be in. In fact it doesn'tt even get installed, instead the installer appers to simply reference one already on the client.

It also explains why it appears a few apps appear to install their own versions. Thanks.

This:

Windows will use a dll installed in the application directory regardless of registry settings if a version is found in the startup directory for the application

is a real gem. Is this true even as far back as WIn2K?

One of the rules is you can't replace any of the dll's installed with the operating system, or the service pack(s) installed. That said, you could put the dll in your application directory and not register it (leaving the original dll registered): Windows will use a dll installed in the application directory regardless of registry settings if a version is found in the startup directory for the application.
