>>>>Which brings me to a question which is itching me for a while - though I may only assume the things are unchanged, because I don't have the means to check whether it's still so (read: no TV). And the question is, why is there British content on PBS and NPR?
>>>
>>>Because it's high quality content that has an audience in the U.S. Why was "The Godfather" shown in movie theaters in other countries? Thank goodness there aren't borders around most media and entertainment. And fewer all the time....
>>
>>Really? So how come none of the rest of the world is capable of producing anything even remotely matching the quality of the content? Not even any other anglophone countries. We never see even a token proof of existence of television anywhere else in the world. It may be interesting to see how is "Are you being served" and other sitcoms so good that it's run for years, while anything made in, say, whole of Europe, Africa and South America is not worthy showing. While I had cable, I saw a total of one show made abroad (apart from the UK).

>>Borders may be vanishing, but not from TV and radio.

>So I guess your point was that the only foreign shows on American TV and radio are British? Probably because they're in English, don't you think? There are Spanish speaking stations which cater to the growing Hispanic population, and I understand there are lots of Chinese cable channels in the Bay Area, but it seems to me most foreign programs would be unintelligible to most Americans.

>You can see movies from around the world here, with subtitles.

Do you get Sundance and IFC on cable there? Most Sundance foreign films are subtitled (but not all). We also have a channel (can't remember what it is named) which is foreign films on demand 24x7 from just about every country that produces films. You select the country and then the movie via a menu system. Those are not subtitled or dubbed.
