I am not in the British-shows-are-better camp -- it's a golden era of American TV shows -- but there are a couple I have enjoyed. Monty Python, of course, going way back. More recently I liked "Spooks," which was aired in the U.S. as "MI-5." It went to pot the third season IMO but the first two seasons were as riveting as any movie. The second or third episode ended with what remains the most shocking scene I have ever seen in a TV show. It whacked me from left field into right field. If you watch it you'll know exactly which scene I mean.
