You're right. Perhaps we can also test against some most commonly used database file (or some other file the application opens right away) using WhoHasFile routine. However, this idea just came to my mind, so I'm not sure it would work.

There could be procedure running periodically to clean up "dead" users, but it's still not a good solution.

I guess I don't see a solution from the top of my head.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
