Nothing wrong with US or Canadian bread as long as you don't buy the semi cooked dough sold by Mr Christie or Westons or any of the major "bakeries". That stuff is only good for dough wars. Take a slice, lose the crust, mold the rest into a small ball, and have at it. At least that's what my brother and I did with it when we were kids. My mother learned quickly that if she couldn't manage to get to a proper bakery, it was better not to buy any bread at all - it wouldn't get eaten anyway.
