Well, there's a moment that vfp decides to trigger the Access Denied error. If that's done only after not being able to open the .DBF, then that's not good enough I guess. It should also trigger that error after not being able to open the .CDX or .FPT, don't you agree?!

BTW, I'm not holding you accountable for that behavior. Don't get me wrong here. You are the one who took time to answer and for that I am grateful. My purpose of delving somewhat deeper is to get a better understanding of what happens and what can be done to prevent the 'Memo file...' error. I assume it's too late now to ask the vfp-team to repair this behavior.
